Today I have a fun and functional DIY bookshelf to share with you! My mom and dad used to refinish and sell antique furniture when I was a kid, so a love for orphan furniture is in my blood. I knew I could turn this old, beat-up fireplace mantle in to an up-cycled focal point for my living room. About 6 months ago, I rescued this old fireplace mantle from a second-hand store. With the help of my handy hubby, we built a bookshelf out of inexpensive MDF and mounted it in to the mantle. Because the mantle was rather old and the paint was chipping (old chipping paint plus teething baby = bad idea), I sanded the mantle and painted it white, with a splash of yellow for some dimension and character. Voila! A fireplace, turned bookshelf that really gives the room some personality. Special thanks to Design Sponge, who featured this Before/After transformation. And extra special thanks to the talented photographer, Sharon Montrose, whose image is displayed above the mantle.

looks great- esp. love the pop of yellow! feels like a fireplace should have been there all along!
well that is just wonderful
That looks amazing!! So clever
Wow! I honestly love this to pieces! Its crazy how huge of a difference that coat of paint gave it!! Love!
Thanks Blair! Glad you like it
I just love this idea!
I’m a south TX momma transplant whose lived in cold states such as VA, OH, PA. When my husband and I bought our first house out here in TX we decided to avoid houses with fireplaces. The first reason being that the fireplace locations in most houses we saw during out house hunt, tended to leave little room for design variation. The second reason was, “why bother?” Summer lasts for 10 months out of the year here!
What we didn’t anticipate was missing the quant atmosphere that a fireplace provides, even when not lit. THIS project is perfect for people in my situation. We can easily place this in any room/place in our house and move it whenever we want to change the look. It also gives us that old world ambiance we’ve been missing.
Thank you for this fab design idea!
very interesting, thanks
